Vizianagaram is a city and the headquarters of Vizianagaram district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is central Eastern Ghats, about 24 km (15 mi) west of the Bay of Bengal and 40 km (25 mi) north-northeast of Visakhapatnam. The city has a population of 2,28,025 and was the headquarters of the rajas of Vizianagaram, who played a notable role in the history of Andhra Pradesh in the 18th century and were patrons of education and the fine arts.
Air: Vizianagaram is well connected to other major cities of the country via regular flights. The nearest airport is in Visakhapatnam at a distance of 48kms.
Railways: Vizianagaram Junction Railway Station is one of the important railway stations on Howrah–Chennai main line, serving as the point where links from Raipur and Jharsuguda via Titlagarh connect to the main line. It is administered under South Coast Railway zone.
Road: The city is connected to Visakhapatnam (60 km) via NH 43 & NH 5, to Vijayawada (394 km) via NH 5, to Raipur (526 km) via NH 59, to Hyderabad (664 km) via NH 5 & NH9 and to Chennai (416 km) via NH 5 and AH 45.
The District Hospital, Vizianagaram has been established under the control of A.P. Vaidya Vidhana Parishad in the year 1988 and has been functioning since then providing Medical and Health services to the citizen of the District as well as the surrounding mandals of the neighboring Districts and Orissa State.
The Hospital initially had bed strength of 100 beds and expanded and renovated under Andhra Pradesh First Referral Health Systems Project aided by the World Bank and Bed Strength was increased to 200 beds and subsequently the bed strength was raised to 400 beds.
Consequent to the sanctioning of establishing Government Medical College at Vizianagaram, the District Hospital, Vizianagaram under the control of A.P. Vaidya Vidhana Parishad has been upgraded as Teaching Hospital, Government General Hospital, Vizianagaram since 01.10.2022.
The Govt. General Hospital has 2 separate buildings to provide patient care. The main hospital in Cantonment area and MCH Hospital (Gosha Hospital) is 6 km away from the main hospital.
The site area of the GGH Hospital BUILDING is 17.027 Acres; the plinth area of the main hospital building is 7,85,543 Sqft.
The site area of the M.C.H. HOSPITAL(GOSHA HOSPITAL) is 07 Acres, the plinth area of the main hospital building is 3,06,879 Sqft.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to establish a Government Medical College in every district. At present in the state of Andhra Pradesh, there are 11 Government Medical Colleges in 13 Districts except West Godavari and Vizianagaram District. There is a need for the establishment of Medical Colleges in these 2 districts also.
The Directorate of Medical Education, Andhra Pradesh has furnished detailed proposal for establishing a Medical college at Vizianagaram with detailed estimates certified by APMSIDC.
As per G.O.Ms.No 27, Dt: 13.02.2019, The Government of Andhra Pradesh accorded sanction for establishing Government Medical College of Vizianagaram in the premises of District Hospital, Vizianagaram.
